Biofilms are key to many biological processes. Microscopic imaging of biofilms is one of the important tools used for characterizing biofilms. In this work, we propose to develop computational approaches using both traditional and machine learning approaches to detect and segment biofilm regions that were studied by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). We plan to study FISH images of biofilms formed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an opportunistic pathogen.
